Getting Started with Social Networks

Do you want to create a profile on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, but aren't sure how?

Has your employer invited the Networking 2.0 team to give a training on professional use of social media at your organisation, but you're not yet comfortable enough using these networks to follow the training?

Don't worry, no need to panic!
Here we'll provide you with some videos, guides and other resources to help you get started on your road to mastering social media! All you have to do is create a profile on each network, explore the sites a bit and consult our training documents. Then, you'll be ready to follow our live training!

Resources

Networking
To better understand the concept of social networking, have a look at this Commoncraft video before you begin.

Facebook
To create a Facebook profile, the instructions provided on the web site are fairly clear. Go to www.facebook.com and follow the instructions in the section called Sign Up, on the right of the screen. If needed, consult the Facebook Help Centre, which includes a section on profile creation issues.

Many online resources also exist for creating and/or managing a Facebook profile, so why not try a Google search? We personally like the Mashable Facebook Guide Book, which has many helpful articles for all user-levels.

If your need an introduction to Facebook, consider viewing this Commoncraft video introduction to Facebook.

TwitterBefore creating a Twitter profile, have a look at this Commoncraft instructional video, which introduces the "microblog" site that is Twitter.

If you don't want to create an account right away, you can still use the Twitter search function, which is one of the main advantages of the site. Here's another short Commoncraft video that discusses this feature in greater detail and will give you an idea of why you might find it useful.

It's quite simple to create a Twitter account, as your profile contains very few elements. You can create your account by visiting www.twitter.com

The Twitter site offers an excellent guide on How to Sign Up on Twitter. You can also consult their Help Centre for more answers to your questions.

Another great resource is the Mashable Twitter Guide Book, which walks you through basic steps or more complicated tasks. There are many other additional resources online, easily found by running a search on Google or your favourite search engine.

For a more complete introduction, you can also consult our training guide, The Professional Guide to Twitter Networking, in which the first chapter is dedicated to account creation (guide coming soon!). You can find it by visiting the Twitter tab on our blog.

LinkedIn
LinkedIn is a bit more difficult to use than the other two social networks, but it's also much easier to create a LinkedIn account than it is to have a complete profile. This professional network is very popular in the business world, but isn't largely known in the greater public.
To create a LinkedIn profile, go to the site www.linkedin.com and fill in the form that appears on the screen under Join LinkedIn Today. You must fill in all four required fields, i.e. First Name, Last Name, Email, Password. You can choose a new password, or the same as your email password; just be sure to write it out by hand and keep it in a safe place in case you forget it.

To learn more about how to complete your profile, you can follow the instructions in our Professional Guide to LinkedIn Networking (available on our site soon!), or you can consult the LinkedIn Learning Centre for answers to common questions.
